How Do I Get Help for a Drinking/drug Problem at College?
Question by HeyTherePony: How do I get help for a drinking/drug problem at college?
I was prescribed Ambien for insomnia about six months ago. I have overdosed on it twice now. I would often take it to get high rather than to be able to sleep (but I needed it to be able to sleep). I have been off of those for a week now, only because I used up all my pills. If I wouldn’t have run out of pills, I don’t think I would’ve been able to stop taking them, and it would’ve gotten worse (it was already pretty bad).
I’ve also noticed that I get excited to go out and drink with my friends, and I often overdrink. I’ll be drunk and still want to drink more. I then put myself in dangerous situations (walk home by myself, leave with guys I just met, etc). I don’t even like the taste of alcohol, I just like being drunk.
I’m not sure how to get help for this, if I need it. I don’t want to completely give up alcohol. It’s college and I like to have just a little bit of a buzz to go out and talk to people and dance and stuff. So I’m not sure what to do.

Ambien is addictive, most of the time doctors try to prescribe something else. Ask your doctor for some different pills, like Clonidine. It is used to treat high blood pressure but it also makes you tired. ADHD kids take Redilin. Redilin makes it hard for them to sleep and so doctors will most of the time give them a low dose of Clonidine. I’m sure your doctor will prescribe it for you if you ask. And a low dose won’t do anything to your blood pressure. And it may help teach you not to overdose, because if you overdose on these they will lower your blood pressure too much and make you sick. You won’t want to do that. But if you take the regular dose then you will be fine and sleep better. ( I am taking Clonadine. ) As for your alcohol problem, limit yourself!! And have some self control! I honestly can’t tell you some magic pill or book or anything that will make you stop drinking, you have to restrict yourself. Don’t ruin your life in college hun.
