If Coffee Is a Drug, Then Why Do We Drink It?

Question by TheMaria232: If coffee is a drug, then why do we drink it?
I know this is kind of a dumb question, kind of like asking “if medicines are drugs, then why do we take them?” But I’ve always wondered why coffee lacks any serious side effects, and why it’s still labeled as a drug when people are so tolerant of it and can drink up to 5 or more cups per day. Any ideas on this one, or am I just missing out on something?

You asked 2 dumb things here (no offence).

1. Medicines are just refereed to as ‘drugs’. Basically a drug is not a medicine and a medicine is not a drug.
2. Coffee is not a drug. It contains a drug called caffine, although only in small amounts. Coffee drinkers will be addicted to coffee due to caffine. It is quite noticeable. As you said, coffee drinkers can drink upto 5 cups a day but not because they need to, its because they are addicted to it.

Drug just means any nervous system intoxicant that’s not a food (nutritionally). People were drinking coffee daily before the ridiculous modern “drugs are evil” mentality took hold. Thank Christ they didn’t go all Mormon and ban it along with alcohol, weed, and opiates.
