“You find people oiling hair every single day, the hair sweats and it doesn’t get washed. What do you think happens? It goes limp and becomes thin because it is not breathing,” Shamillah Mohammed, a hairstylist at SUQA, says.
5 Hair MYTHS – BUSTED

“Old wives’ tales and ineffective products that claim to treat or rehabilitate hair often have a placebo effect because people want them to work,” says Davis-Sivasothy, author of “Hair Care Rehab,” (www.haircarerehab.com). “But many of these ideas and products actually do the opposite of what’s intended, and they delay the user from seeking out real solutions.”
Davis-Sivasothy debunks the following common hair-care myths:
• Myth: There’s a magic pill (or oil, serum or balm) to grow our hair faster, stronger or thicker. Unfortunately, no. Hair growth is genetically predetermined and controlled by our hormones. Unless the magic pill affects our genes or hormones, there’s no hope that it might make our hair grow. (This includes prenatal vitamins. Credit the upsurge in hormone levels during pregnancy for those vibrant tresses!) Basic vitamin supplements can offer slight improvements in hair quality, but only if our body truly lacks the particular vitamin or mineral being taken.
Hair products are NOT made of glue to fix, prevent, reverse hair from getting damaged, or hair loss, or make them grow . . . . they are a trillion dollar business. They also do NOT give money back guarantee for damaged hair or hair loss caused by heat & chemicals – hair’s worst enemies.
“No hair can change the hair’s biology,” says Eric Bone, senior VP of global research and innovation @ L’Oreal USA. “Products that ‘repair’ them are like glue used to put a broken vase back together. At the end of the day, it’s still broke,” says dermatologist Paul J. McAndrews, MD, a clinical professor @ the University of Southern California School of Medicine. “Overall, products are a temporary fix, although some can help prevent damage. But your best bet is really to stop damaging hair, period.”
Example: Head & Shoulders anti-dandruff shampoo, Zinc pyrithione, an effective antifungal and antibacterial agent, is an often-prescribed medication to treat dandruff and other symptoms related to scalp and hair. It is most known for being in the Head & Shoulders brand of anti-dandruff shampoo, at 1-percent potency.
An estimated 10 million men in Taiwan suffer from scalp and hair irritations, with 5 million men in danger of hair-loss. One in two men report symptoms of dandruff, itchiness and excessively oily hair and scalp.
Apart from using an inappropriate shampoo, the increasing rate of hair-loss and scalp irritation is due to Taiwan’s humid climate, which promotes symptom-inducing bacterial and fungal growth.
According to studies, the genus of fungi Malasseziaa globossa is often identified as the primary cause of hair and scalp irritations among men. Doctors urge the public to consult physicians and pharmacists before conducting treatment.
Take it back to where you bought it.
Stop using it ASAP.
