week later he began getting withdrawal symptoms that have lasted for months. He is not the same person he was before. Are there any links I can go to, or any online support groups that deal with this subject?

It sounds like he may have a hormonal/chemical imbalance and may be experiencing bouts with depression.
He should talk to a doctor about it.
