Gasquet Update: Should We Believe Him Now?

Question by ???¡????: Gasquet update: Should we believe him now?
Gasquet publicly spoke out about his positive test for cocaine for the first time recently. Here is an excerpt from his interview with L’Equipe.

“When I learned about it, I was still in Rome, the day after my defeat against [Fernando] Verdasco in the quarterfinals,” said Gasquet. In an official e-mail notification he saw the heading, ‘Miami, cocaine metabolite.’ I remember that word, ‘metabolite.’ I called my agent. I did not understand the English, there were these phrases everywhere — it was incomprehensible…I thought it was a new ATP list of products we cannot take. And he told me, ‘You tested positive for cocaine at Miami.’ ”

After the initial shock, Gasquet felt convinced that a mistake would be uncovered somewhere. “In fact, I had a big hope about the B sample, it was so unbelievable.” When it also came back positive, he underwent a hair test to prove he was not a habitual user and a DNA test to check if the urine sample was indeed his.

The Frenchman stated that he has “never, ever, ever, taken cocaine.” He indicated the trace amounts found in his system may have come from a party he attended shortly before being tested. “I saw a person who was at the party there, and they said they had been offered cocaine, that there was an enormous amount of cocaine there that evening. I did not see it. You can well imagine that if I had seen it, I would have left the club,” said Gasquet.

He is planning unspecified legal action, but even if he is banned for two years, he vows to return. “My motivation has never been stronger. I am 23 [he turns 23 later this month], the good times will come back,” he said. “I am innocent, and I can’t wait to start playing again. My career is far from finished.”

I don’t know about you, but he genuinely sounds like he is telling the truth. I am hoping that he is innocent and can return this year. Despite what he says, two years is an eternity in a tennis player’s career and this can destroy a career. What do you all think?

Even if it is true, banning him is beyond ridiculous. It is not a performance enhancing drug. What he does in his own personal time is not our concern. Sure, if law enforcement catch him with such drugs in his possession he should face the same penalties that any average person would, an average person wouldn’t lose their job over it.
