How Many People Out There Are Battling an Addiction to Prescription Pain Killers?

Question by ?Peace Officer?: How many people out there are battling an addiction to prescription pain killers?
And why are so many doctors in denial about people “being in pain”?
Don’t they realize that most of the people who go in there “in pain” are just saying that to get the drugs they want?

These days drs. are very paranoid about prescribing pain killers b/c of the abuse potential. They are highly trained in recognizing the signs of someone pill shopping. I have been having extreme, chronic back pain and went to see a dr. Since it was the 1st time I saw that dr and have no history with him he may have thought I was pill shopping which I’m the type of person who hates going to dr. and only go if I must. Needless to say I didn’t get any painkillers, just a pres. for aleve (big deal, its otc and I already tried that) Seems to me its difficult to get pain killers and abusers have ruined it for the ppl who are true pain sufferers. And no I have never been addicted to pain killers. I have rarely taken them.

I suppose you have no idea what constant, 24 hour a day arthritis pain is like. Every once in a while. like once a month or two, I need a break from the constant pain and will take a strong pain killer for it. Its nice to have them. I don’t know anyone who has an actual addiction to pain killers.

Most doctors won’t give you anything especially strong. I’m sure there are abusers out there somewhere but I’ve never met one. Doctors “in denial” about pain? One of the basic responsibilities of being a doctor is to “alieviate pain”. Its part of the oath.

Most abused drugs probably are the psychological prescriptions, that’s what I see people becomming dependent on, but there doesn’t seem to be much concern about those mind altering drugs.
It seems that pain killers are the new “reefer madness” drug of today, another non-problem that polititions create to make narcs look important instead of dealing with the real problems.
