My 20 year old son is involved in a program for “at risk youth”. They build affordable housing. He and my foster son are the only ones with ASD in the program. My son has frequent melt downs and his supervisor refuses to believe they are caused by his Aspergers because he “shows leadership skill sometimes”. Does anyone know of any articles or books I can give to the program to help them understand my son’s behavior is not voluntary? I already gave them a copy of “Aspergers and Difficult Moments”. Please help! They are talking about firing him!

There is a book called ‘The Complete Guide To Aspergers Syndrome’ by Tony Attwood and it has a 5* rating. You can get used but for half price from Amazon.

Showing them some books or articles may not do the trick. Ask if any of the staff have tried a Behavioral Modification Program with your son. If his meltdowns are caused by some environmental trigger, rather than firing him, they should be working with him to try to keep him away from situations that trigger meltdowns, or they should be helping him learn problem-solving and coping strategies so that he knows when something is upsetting him and what he can do about it.

I know that people with ASD are not always in control of their behavior, but if the staff work with him on a behavioral contract, the number of meltdowns should decrease. Behavior modification programs have been used for everything from autism to drug addiction to obsessive-compulsive disorders, and when they are managed by a devoted team of caretakers and psychologists, the results are really stunning.

Ask the staff what they have been doing to help your son with the meltdowns. Do they just let them happen, or do they have a system in place for addressing his needs? Have they determined if the meltdowns are caused by an environmental or emotional trigger and, if so, what are they doing to help your son cope when similar triggers are encountered?

Talk with the staff or a program manager first. If ASD kids in the program are not being supported, that is something the managerial staff needs to know about.
