The Qing Dynasty, the last imperialist government of China, was corrupt and weak, its military far outdated in the face of British industrialisation. So, the British and other Europeans invaded this previously impenetrable land, and used superior military technology to open up trade with the Far-East.
And what did the British trade? Opium of all things, it’s useful on two levels – one, it weakens the Chinese population, and the drug induces more deadly addiction to circulate more trade, hence the term “Sick Man of Asia”.
Two, the British knew the Chinese government will ban opium once they realised the extent of its harm, which the imperial government eventually did, and this gave the British an excuse to openly invade China on the grounds of trade violation.
It was the British, as well as all European method of “legalising” their actions, they deliberately provoked the natives to such an extreme the natives were forced to retaliate, which gave them the reason to wage war, on those they knew didn’t stand a chance against them.
It was a series of utterly humiliating defeats in modern Chinese history that completely ended isolationist imperialist rule and brought it into the industrialised world. Many would also say the foreign invasions which costed so many Chinese lives is also a reason why the Chinese government has been so vigorous in their development, so not to suffer further defeats.
