The song is a celebration of a very bad (but apparently very exciting) relationship. Like too many drama-filled relationships, the things that make it bad are also the things that make it exciting and compelling.

Lady Gaga sets up the paradox of wanting something that is bad by describing what she wants in terms of things that are shocking and harmful (“I want your ugly/I want your disease”; “I want your horror…’cause you’re a criminal”; etc.).

She is drawn to the dangerous, crazy aspects of the relationship (“I want your psycho”; “I want your drama/with a touch of your hand/I want your leather-studded kiss in the sand”).

To her credit, she doesn’t throw in an easy comparison to other types of addiction (e.g., drugs). She does, however, suggest that the relationship is hurtful both to her (“all your love is revenge”) and to others (“want you in my room when your baby is sick” – suggesting that the object of her affection is cheating on his “baby”).

The song portrays someone who is torn between feelings of victimization (“caught in a bad romance”), desire (“want your bad romance”), and ironic self-awareness (“you and me could write a bad romance” – i.e., a cheap work of pulp fiction).

If you’ve never been in a relationship like this, be grateful! 🙂

Hope this helps,
Iris
